A knock at the door made me jump, and I dumped the roller and tray in the bath. I hadn’t got used to visitors just yet. On opening the door I found a smiley Max, her hands full of beer and Chinese food – perfect.

“Hey you... good timing,” I said with a grin.

Her smile was equally wide in return. “Really, are you all finished?”

“Yep... just the brush to wash.” I said with a raised eyebrow.

I closed the door before leading us into the kitchen. Glancing up at the clock, I was surprised to see that it was almost six-thirty. I hadn’t realised how late it was no wonder I was so hungry. I washed the remaining paint off my hands while Max unpacked our food; the smell was delicious. “How’s Millie?” I asked, recalling her appointments.

“Good, the doc changed some of her pain meds. I think she liked the acupuncture stuff. The guy has agreed to do some home visits, so we’ll see,” she said as she pulled two plates from the draining board.

“Are we still okay for tomorrow?” I asked, thinking about our trip to Georgetown.

“No problem, all sorted,” Max replied, pulling cutlery from the drawer.

Drying my hands on a towel, I moved towards her, wrapping my arms around her waist from behind. Burying my face in her shoulder, I breathed in the now-familiar intoxicating scent of Max, a mix of sun-warmed skin and vanilla.

“Do you want to see my handiwork?”

“I do.”

She turned in my arms, wafting the scent of black bean sauce with her. Leaning forward, I covered her lips with mine as she pulled me in closer.

“Are we sleeping out here tonight?” she asked as we passed the mattress I had dumped earlier.

Her words made me turn to face her. “You’re staying over?” I asked, a hopeful look on my face.

“If that’s okay?”

My wide grin must have said all she needed to know as she smiled back. “More than okay. I thought with the paint fumes in here it would be better out there.” I replied as we entered my new bedroom.

“Wow, you’re a fast worker… it looks great.”

“Thanks… I think we’ve both earned a cold beer today,” I said; my stomach was begging for Chinese food.
